Why we DON’T do the Things we say we will do
One question I have asked myself for the longest time is “Why don’t we do the things we say we will do?”
1. The most common response to that question is “I don’t feel like it.”
But the truth is WE WON’T ALWAYS FEEL LIKE DOING EVERYTHING WE NEED TO DO.
Our bodies want what is good and easy. When we prioritize what should be done, we normally forego something fun and easy.
For instance; if you say you will write an article (feel free to customize this to whatever you said you will do), you might feel so sleepy and the battle is between writing and sleeping.
Unfortunately, we will naturally gravitate towards sleep.
Honestly, there is no nice way to go after dreams and ambitions. It comes at a cost.
Some have had it lucky for example if they came from wealth.
But the reality remains that if they don’t do something to retain the money, soon it will deplete. I’m sure such stories are familiar.
Putting in the work has no alternative.
I think this is one bit we have to make peace with. It’s on rare occasions that your body will choose to do what is hard.
If you truly know something is important to you, you have to numb your body to do what is required to achieve that thing.
For me, one of the hardest things I have to do in my YouTube journey is editing!!!
Seeing the end results is always beautiful but the process is tiring. One video could even mean 4 HOURS of editing!!
Have in mind, that there is also learning along the way…as in there is a LOT!
Now I am trying to organize that area of my journey by splitting the edit into sessions, so I’ll probably do around 3 edits before uploading, depending on the length of the video.
This is proving to be more manageable than what I did previously.
I have embraced that editing is part of the process for now.
Food for thought: What thing do you need to numb yourself to and keep doing for a little longer?

Thinking about doing something is not enough; you have to do the thing!
Do it until you are numb to it. You do it because you understand it’s what gets you closer to the bigger picture.
2. The reason for doing it is not convincing enough
One of my favorite YouTubers to watch is Wode Maya. He is all about changing the African narrative and exposing the beauty of Africa to the world.
In one of his interviews, you could see the passion he has for the things he is doing.
He admitted that sometimes it’s not easy and there are days he doesn’t want to be on the camera, but when he sees the impact his message has on people he keeps doing it.
Other people are inspired by having come from poverty and not wanting to go back there.
I guess this calls for a lot of introspection. Ask deep questions.
Why should you do what you want to do?
If it’s not convincing enough for you, chances are you won’t see the need to keep pursuing it.
3. Sometimes we lack focus and get distracted
One powerful thing I have heard is that you can’t say you were distracted if you cannot point out what you were distracted from.
We get distracted because we are trying to reach out for something comfortable and something that will bring about happy hormones.
Scrolling on social media is satisfying…and this is one of the things that distracts us.
But here is a funny yet freeing thing, if you allocate that in your schedule, it won’t be a distraction anymore.
If you decide your social media time will be between 2-3 pm, that is not wasted time, because you actually planned for it.
Instead of saying we didn’t do something because we were distracted, why not account for the distraction?
It allows us more time to focus because we know our social media time is coming.

In summary, we will not always want to do everything. However, when the why for doing it is super clear, just numb yourself and do the thing that gets you to the why, just for a day.
Then tomorrow do the same thing, numb yourself and step up for that day. beat the flesh until it submits.
Then make room for distraction so that you don’t feel like you are denying yourself.
Our bodies have a bad way of responding to feeling denied. Once it gets what it has wanted it goes all out and it may be hard to tame it.
And the distractions I’m talking about, are things like social media, playing video games, movies,,, etc. I know it’s relative so it’s good to know the distraction I’m referring to…lol
I leave you with the famous words of Paul;
Ephesians 3:20- Now to him who can do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us.
You can commit to the things you say you will do because you have the strength of the Lord inside of you. His power is at work within you and have what it takes to commit.
You can actually do it! I’m vouching for you!
Xx;)
