A Short Overview on Acceptance (Must-read)
Have you ever gone through an experience that took you time to accept?
Has a friend ever told you something that sounded unbelievable and you are still grappling with how true it was to date?
I recently had a very clear imagination of the future that really scared and excited me at the same time.
It was a picture of our family, raising teenagers, in a very beautiful home and making tough decisions, all at once.
This was in the same vision.
I remember tearing up because, it looked like a lot to me, yet still, very fulfilling. As in how can one person have so much to handle, you know?
That picture has not left my mind. Well, it’s not constantly there but I often think about it.
Little did I know I needed to learn about ACCEPTANCE.
Let’s talk about that!
Acceptance means to acknowledge and embrace reality, including our thoughts, feelings, and experiences without denying them or trying to change them.
Acceptance will help you navigate life with resilience and inner peace.
There is unnecessary suffering that comes from futile attempts to change or control things that are beyond us.
Additionally, with acceptance comes healthy relationships because it fosters understanding and empathy toward the experiences and perspectives of others.
The different types of acceptance are
- Self-acceptance– You embrace yourself wholly with your strengths, weaknesses, temperaments, imperfections, and abilities.
- Acceptance of others– It means you acknowledge and respect the differences in beliefs and perspectives of other people.
- Situation acceptance– It has to do with external circumstances. You take things as they come, whether positive or negative, and you learn how to make necessary adjustments.
Situation acceptance is my reference concerning the ‘vision’ I had. It was clear that in due time, things would be changing.
Change is inevitable and I need to keep reminding myself of that. You need to remember that.
Some challenges in life may be caused by resisting change. Learn to accept change among other circumstances around you and see how positively you address them.
Some benefits of acceptance are
– Low stress levels
– Improved mental health
– Enhanced relationships
– Increased resilience
Please note that acceptance is not passivity:
Passivity is on the negative side. It’s tolerating harmful situations.
Acceptance on the other hand is acknowledging the reality and choosing to respond to it constructively.
A few questions for thought:
What do you need to accept about yourself?
What have you not accepted about someone close to you?
What situation do you need to accept?
Acceptance is a transformative attitude. Let’s embrace reality with openness and compassion, to help us navigate life\’s ups and downs with ease and fulfillment.
